The Bell – Bouke Groen (Netherlands)
8 June – 11 August 2019
Monday – Sunday 9.30am – 6.00pm
WWT Llanelli
Soundlands in partnership with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) and Migrations presents The Bell by Bouke Groen.
Bouke Goen was chosen from over one hundred artists from around the world who submitted proposals to Soundlands Open Call 2019. The Bell is his striking new art installation created especially for the Llanelli Wetland reserve. An antique church bell tolls but is strangely sealed in a sculpture of glass cubes.
For centuries, bells have warned us of impending disaster. But what danger is this bell alerting us to? Will we heed its warning?
The Artist
Bouke Groen is a visual artist from the Netherlands who often works with sound. In his work Groen questions the ways in which we interact with each other and our environment. However, he doesn’t take a side in debates but rather attempts to reflect, without judgement, how we treat each other and the world. Groen has exhibited widely across the Netherlands but this is his first time exhibiting in Wales.
“The idea for The Bell came to me naturally. In Friesland where I live, there are similar wetlands called the Wadden. I know this area and could easily visualise how I would make the artwork. WWT Llanelli is an amazing place and I hope you’ll be intrigued by my work there.“ – Bouke Groen
